Austin psych/dream poppers Semihelix share “Downstream” from forthcoming EP/7″ |
![]() Photo by Angela Betancourt Austin, Texas’s Semihelix is a ’90s leaning dream and psychedelic pop trio formed in a cloud of fuzz and delay in 2012. With melodic, yet loud, sounds that harken to influences as broad as the Pixies, Black Tambourine, Sonic Youth and even the Kinks, the band released their last full-length, Recoil, via Mariel Recording Company on October 1, 2021. The release garnered international recognition from tastemakers both near and far. Semihelix are releasing singles this Summer leading up to a 7″ EP release in early 2024. These songs are about resiliency, healing, overcoming trauma and other seemingly impossible situations, love and social justice. The second single from the EP, “Downstream,” hit streaming today and you can listen to it here. The song is about letting go of negative patterns and focusing on gratitude. It’s about “out with the old, in with the new” when it comes to releasing things that don’t serve us. It’s about releasing expectations, and floating down a calm stream in life; a note to self to slow down and take deep breaths and let go. “Downstream” was produced and mixed by Matt Gerard (Spoon, Future Islands, !!!) at The Hen House in Austin and mastered by Max Lorenzen (Shearwater, A.Sinclair, Spoon) February 2023. The band will perform the single tonight at a special release party in Austin, Texas, with The Et Ceteras.
