Fueled by American Muscle, Jack Daniels and strong bud, Mississauga, Ontario-based quartet BlackWater Cobra recently unleashed their debut single “Guy Like Me” upon the world.

With a style that incorporates both Southern fuzz and 70’s arena rock, they’ve been best described as “in-your-face country rock” and they pull no punches on “Guy Like Me.”

BlackWater Cobra are Eddie Savage, Jonny Metcalfe, Jordan Stevenson and Andrew Learner.

The Music Bugle had the opportunity to talk with Savage about “Guy Like Me” and more.

Music Bugle – How did you guys decide the band name?

Eddie Savage – Band names are always so tough to decide on. I always liked the word “blackwater,” mainly from the Doobie Brothers tune, so we started with that and one of the guys said “BlackWater Cobra” and it just seemed to stick!

Music Bugle – How would you describe Mississauga, Ontario to someone who has never been there before?

Eddie Savage – It’s funny, man. None of us even live there anymore! However, Mississauga is such a melting pot. We basically started the band while drinking beers out back of the Rehearsal Factory. The rest is history!

Music Bugle – What directly inspired your debut single “Guy Like Me”?

Eddie Savage – I wrote that song on a Friday night after working my ass off all week, hating my job. This song was inspired from me just wanting to quit my job and go on tour with a kickass band.

Music Bugle – What excites you the most about your style of music?

Eddie Savage – I think our sound is hard to pin down to one style. You can hear the hard rock influence and the country influence. It’s like we took all the bands we love and threw them in a blender and what was left at the end was our sound.

Music Bugle – How have you been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic?

Eddie Savage – Covid definitely put a pretty drastic turn on the band, between losing about 30-plus shows, changing members and not being able to complete recording our first full album due to the studio being closed. Covid sucks and I think we can all agree that we will be a lot happier when it’s said and done with!

Music Bugle – Where do you go when you need an escape?

Eddie Savage – The garage! There is something that’s relaxing to me about cracking a beer and lighting a smoke, turning the tunes on and taking a seat where you’ve got a nice view of the hotrods and the overwhelming scent of 2 stroke oil from the sleds.

Music Bugle – Who are you listening to right now, music-wise?

Eddie Savage – So many kickass bands out right now – Cadillac Three, Brothers Osbourne, Brent Cobb, Justin Moore, all these guys have put out some killer music over the last year or so.

Music Bugle – What’s something that you wish happened more in today’s music industry?

Eddie Savage – More originality and less snap tracks. Some of these new “country” songs all sound the same, talking about the same thing, at the same tempo, over the same damn snap track! C’mon, people, it’s getting ridiculous!

Music Bugle – What are your goals for 2021?

Eddie Savage – Finish the album and just keep creating music that people will enjoy.

Music Bugle – If you had to pick your own theme song, what would it be?

Eddie Savage – Justin Moore – “Old Back In New School.” Justin is such a rare cat. You can tell this dude means business and that he is genuine in what he sings about! I am a pretty old-school dude myself and I think we need some more of the old ways things used to be in this modern society.
