With vulnerable tracks like “Underwater” under his name, alt-folk-pop artist Alec Rose has already made a strong impression with music aficionados this year with his signature falsetto.

“Underwater” came to him while in a subconscious mind drift during a writing session on an LA porch. He then drew a connection between the lyrics and a recurring dream he had about breathing underwater. With the help of his good friend and producer NICOLOSI, “Underwater” rose to the surface and saw the light of day.

The Music Bugle had the opportunity to chat with the multifaceted singer-songwriter – who has referred to Bon Iver, Frank Ocean, Alabama Shakes and Phil Collins as strong influences – about the moment that made him want to become a musician, how he would describe LA to someone who has never been there before and much more, which you can check out below.

Music Bugle – What excites you the most about your style of music?

Alec Rose – I draw a little bit from everywhere, so I don’t feel tied down to a genre. I love folk and hip-hop and r&b and soul and have the urge to draw in elements from all of them, so that allows for a lot of playfulness musically.

Music Bugle – What’s a song you’ve heard that you find resonates with you the most?

Alec Rose – I love #29 #Strafford APTS by Bon Iver on 22, A Million.

Music Bugle – What was the moment that made you want to become a musician?

Alec Rose – The moment I realized I could write songs on the guitar and then ultimately realizing I could write songs without the guitar – and then music just became this outlet for creativity and emotion that I felt like I couldn’t live without.

Music Bugle – How would you describe Los Angeles to someone who has never been there before?

Alec Rose – A beautiful combination of nature tied up in twisted nurture.

Music Bugle – Who are you listening to right now, music-wise?

Alec Rose – Really enjoying the latest Daniel Caesar album.

Music Bugle – What show are you currently binging?

Alec Rose – “Succession.”

Music Bugle – Does social media help or hurt musicians?

Alec Rose – It helps you if you can manage it. It tends to depress me, personally.

Music Bugle – Where do you go when you need to take a break?

Alec Rose – The hot tub.

Music Bugle – What do you consider the next big step for your career?

Alec Rose – Signing a publishing deal.

Music Bugle – What’s a quote that motivates you to keep on going?

Alec Rose – “Life is too important to be taken seriously.”
