Surf Mesa and Nat Dunn unleashed the exhilarating new single “State Of My Heart.” With Dunn’s soul-shaking vocals and racing, keyboard-fueled production from Surf, the infectious track explodes with the sense of hope and optimism that accompanies a hard-won fresh start. Released via Astralwerks, “State Of My Heart” is available for download / streaming HERE and watch the visualizer HERE. The two artists wrote the song with Eli Teplin, Steph Jones and Phil Scully. Surf, who is coming off a massive series of summer festival performances, has now passed the threshold of three billion global career streams. Dunn, front woman to the Australian duo NAATIONS and longtime collaborator of dance legends like Duke Dumont, Gorgon City and Hayden James, has also established herself as an in-demand songwriter whose collaborations include Marshmello and Anne-Marie’s 10x RIAA Platinum hit “FRIENDS” and Kygo’s 2x Platinum “Carry On.” “‘State Of My Heart’ describes the urge to want someone to have intuition. ‘Don’t you know how I’m feeling? Can’t you feel the state of my heart?’” explains Surf Mesa. “Nat Dunn and I got in the studio and, after messing around with chords, she was humming around a bit and then under her breath, she said, ‘Can’t you feel the state of my heart?’ I immediately was drawn to this hook and we built the track around it!” “Some songs write themselves and SOMH was one of those – much due to the perfect energetic combination in the room that day,” says Nat Dunn. “‘State Of My Heart’ is a declaration of human emotion. It represents the beauty the comes from working on one’s self and second chances.” |
Since making his festival debut in 2021, he’s become a festival staple. Rolling Stone said, “Surf Mesa of ‘ILY’ fame brought the fire to Lollapalooza” while Elite Daily named him as one of the rising stars who “crushed Hangout Fest.” He also played Outside Lands, Ultra, Electric Zoo, Electric Forest, Breakaway Festival and more. SPIN noted, “Platinum at 22, Surf Mesa personifies a new generation in dance music.” Check out his SPIN SET HERE. Forbes said, “Surf Mesa is riding high” and spoke with him at length in this interview. The 22-year-old Seattle songwriter and producer continues to hone the escapist energy of the nostalgic electronic ballads he’s been working toward since he got a copy of FL Studio in third grade. He makes “music for good feels,” which proved a breath of fresh air in these challenging times. Both of his beloved 2020 singles—“ily (i love you baby)” featuring Emilee and “Somewhere” featuring Gus Dapperton—offer romance and refuge for tired minds, drenched in gossamer synths and fueled by insistent drums. 2021’s “Carried Away” with Madison Beer is similarly windswept and optimistic, while “Another Life” featuring FLETCHER and Josh Golden is an intimate dancefloor duet whose lyrics imagine a world where pain of loss has been paved over and love blooms anew. “Marching Band,” his 2022 collaboration with Nitti Gritti, also exemplifies Surf’s placid mindset, which is clearly connecting with listeners. Certified RIAA Platinum and now nearing double Platinum, “ily” has racked up over three billion combined global streams and over four billion TikTok views. The song hit No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart and #2 on Top 40 radio. VEVO named Surf a DSCVR Artist To Watch for 2021 and he appeared on Dancing Astronaut’s list of Artists to Watch in 2022. His whirlwind rise earned him remixing duty on Marshmello and Halsey’s “Be Kind,” and Shawn Mendes’ “Wonder”—both fitting titles for Surf’s heartwarming music to enter mainstream EDM and pop. And yet, after all this, he continues to make music at home alone, the same way he’s worked since he was a kid holed up in his room making beats between Counter-Strike matches. He has humble aims: to make catchy, chill pop music and give others a way to “feel better about their day.” Listening to Surf, it’s hard not to. About Nat Dunn: Praised by leading outlets like TIME, NME, V Magazine, Harper’s Bazaar, Interview Magazine, GQ and more, Nat Dunn is a singer, songwriter and artist from Queensland, Australia. As a writer and curator, she’s collaborated with Marshmello and Anne-Marie (on the 10x RIAA Platinum hit “FRIENDS,” which peaked at No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 and surpassed one billion views on YouTube), Kygo, Rita Ora, Hayden James, Duke Dumont and Charli XCX, among many others. Now her own artist project is taking off. Together with Nicholas Routledge (Nicky Night Time), she also co-founded Naations, which has amassed over 94 million career streams on Spotify. |
