SALLY SHAAR (LEAD VOCALS)
Tunnel Vision is my coming of age story. During the period of writing and recording, there was a lot of growth, a lot of misery, a lot of therapy and a lot of self-reflection.
“Change###” is inspired by all the head spinning the last couple of years have been. It’s been hard to keep up with what’s going on, who’s “right” or “wrong.” At some point, you start to lose it and question the bubble you’re living in. The video was a very fun concept. It started with the clothes changing as many times as possible and a dope classic convertible. The team for every official music video on this Tunnel Vision was the same and we filmed all of them in one weekend. We were going for a modern Fear and Loathing feel. Cruising the deserts and city vibe combined with digital vortexes. Blended in so much that it’s hard to tell the difference after a while.
This album is a reflection of my growing pains, fearlessness, angst, confidence and everything in between that is manifesting in me. I hope that listeners feel connected to some songs and that it fuels them with the power to make their own things or to face their own battles. Also cool if they just want to dance and have a good time. Take what you want from it.
JORDAN CIRCOSTA (DRUMS)
Sometimes, you have to look deep into the darkest parts of yourself to understand who you are. There are those of us that can do that willingly and I hope to be that strong one day. In our case, our lives just didn’t give us the option. Seeing the whole band suffer so much over the past few years only to come back stronger and better than ever has really taught me something about what it means to be human. We didn’t know it at the time, but there was light at the end of the tunnel.
During the making of Tunnel Vision, we spent so much of our time staring into a screen. We were all searching for some kind of meaning and understanding, only to find our own views and biases pumped back into us by an algorithm that has no interest in challenging our ideas, unless it’s to make us angry enough to engage.
We made this record while the world spun out of control. The Tunnel Vision mindset had us staring into the void through our phones, trapped in the echo chamber. But that same focus, when pointed towards music and our love for each other, helped us navigate hopelessness, nervous breakdowns, and worse. Like we say in the song, all we could do was focus on keeping it straight, under the weight of all this “Change###.”
ZACH ZANARDO (GUITAR)
“Change###” was the first track we recorded for Tunnel Vision and it really set the tone for the record. It’s a more bombastic MONOWHALES. Hook-heavy, but more groove-based. An explosive rhythm-section in the guitar solo, with Sally‘s Robert Plant-esqe wailing of emotion bringing it into the final chorus. I really like how we pushed the boundaries of what a rock song can be.
This album is a full-on pandemic-induced identity crisis. Between member changes in the band, not being in a room together for almost six months and a pandemic, we were forced into a whole new artistic process. No longer writing songs in dingy rehearsal spaces, but in isolation over zoom calls. We never got to play the songs live before recording, so that gave a whole new context to the process as well. This was the first time we said, “Fuck it, let’s see if this works.” Self-discovery was a recurrent theme for us as individuals and together as a band. MONOWHALES‘ sound continues to evolve and Tunnel Vision is the next chapter, louder and prouder than ever.
