“Hayward’s hushed vocals and heartfelt, vividly evocative storytelling — joined by that mournful pedal steel — radiate an aching uncertainty and palpable sorrow that make this one a fitting lament for such a heartbreaking loss,” – GORILLA VS. BEAR > STREAM: Maybe Babs – “Simple Life” RIYL: Phoebe Bridgers, Big Thief, Soccer Mommy “In March of 2020, just before the great pause, I had the opportunity to be a part of a singer songwriter residency at the Banff Centre for Arts & Creativity,” said songwriter Babette Hayward (she/her). “I was given a hut to write in where I sat looking out the window at grazing elk and the rocky mountains on the horizon,” she said. “One evening, a few days in, I sat down and wrote this song in full. It’s not often that a song comes to me this easily, but the memories were so vivid in my mind that the song came out almost fully formed. A few days later, I was in the studio recording it with the formidable Banff house band and producer Howard Bilerman (Arcade Fire, Basia Bulat, U.S. Girls), who all truly made the song what it is.” “This is a story of a long lost friend who vanished from her life, but still exists somewhere else. It’s about losing a part of yourself without warning and spending the years after searching places and faces for this missing piece.” |
