Graduation Speech Announces New EP + Single

Following up their April 2021 debut on Jetsam-Flotsam, Graduation Speech is back with a new single titled “Patterns.” The song is the first look at their upcoming EP Controlled Burn that finds Kevin Day (Aspiga) stepping back into a more hands-on approach. The entire EP was tracked in one session at New Jersey’s Gradwell House with almost all of the instrumentation played by Day. The end result is five songs dealing with isolation, change and looking ahead that are captured beautifully by Dave Downham’s (Beach Slang, Pet Symmetry, mewithoutyou) masterful production. “Patterns” is a folkier number, spurred by a shuffling acoustic guitar and accented with distorted, droning chords, a trademark of Day’s decades of songwriting. It’s about killing time and admiring your partner from afar. Jetsam-Flotsam will release Controlled Burn on May 13th, 2022 and have launched pre-orders for the release. The EP will be available digitally and on compact disc. Along with the compact disc, you can preorder a Controlled Burn “listening pack” that includes an exclusive candle from Uncle Ron’s Candle Co. and a medium roast coffee from Essex Coffee. “Patterns” is available now on all of your preferred digital platforms.

Bio:

Day, who also fronts the pop-punk band Aspiga, has always considered Graduation Speech a solo project and his previous releases demonstrate this. 2017’s Quiet and Calm features just Day with his acoustic playing spacious, somber songs; on 2019’s Maintenance Required, he adds additional layers—streaks of guitars, daubs of piano, percussive textures—but the final result still feels like a solo album. 2021’s Private Anxieties, shows the project shedding that designation; though the songs still center around Day’s acoustic guitar, a full band is brought into the fold, transforming these emotional, intimate songs into something more alive. Controlled Burn is the fourth EP under the Graduation Speech moniker and leans heavily on the singer-songwriter approach.
