San Francisco’s very own fast-rising DJ and producer, AIR APPARENT, released his dreamy new single, “All By Yourself (feat. Krysta Youngs).” Indian-American dance musician, Neil Sethi (aka AIR APPARENT), draws on the themes of self-growth and personal discovery in his single and reminds listeners of the inherent beauty that can result from being alone with oneself and allowing focus to sink from the mind the heart. The new track combs through soft and dreamy vocals with a driving subtle beat, as lush, euphoric synth rhythms melt into the sweet, airy vocals of Krysta Youngs.

“All By Yourself” creates the perfect backdrop for recovering from the end of any summer fling, or any relationship that becomes more draining than nourishing over time. The bravery of being alone rather than being lonely shines through. Describing “All By Yourself,” AIR APPARENT says, “There’s an empowered feeling telling someone they’re no good for you and making it clear to them that they’ll have to find solace alone. Rather than sulking in sadness, ‘All By Yourself’ differs from the typical break-up song, showcasing the individual growth of ending a relationship.”

Detailing the creative process behind the production on the track, he adds, “I put the beat for this song together during the winter of 2020. I was craving summer at the time, after what was seeming to be a pretty depressing winter season and was listening to a bunch of summer rock throwbacks from college (Vampire Weekend, Young the Giant, Grouplove) and more recent electronic/funk pop with Jai Wolf. I decided to compose something that evoked that feeling of longing for summer while feeling like it was far away. I landed on creating a driving bassline and contrasting it with some retro Juno-flavored synths for a bright yet nostalgic feel. To come up with the vocal melodic concept, I threw together a Splice vocal sample and manipulated it with pitch shifts.”

Describing the collaboration with Krysta Youngs on the track, AIR APPARENT says, “Having worked with her before, I reached out to Krysta via IG because I thought her and Julia could probably crack open a killer topline from the strong basis I felt it had. I shared some of the adjectives/vibes I felt it evoked for me and Krysta and Julia took that and ran with it! They came up with the first draft/demo, which felt great from the get-go. The hook itself was actually the same tune as the vocal sample I had originally put in the concept and it just ended up working perfectly for the actual melody. We went back and forth on some of the tweaks via email and Krysta sent back a bunch of layers that I was able to plug into the song to really breathe life into it.”

Drawing additional inspiration from a variety of artists and genres such as James Blake, Japanese Breakfast and Vampire Weekend, AIR APPARENT continues to boldly fuse together a myriad of genres. The way guitar tones are incorporated and woven into the production has become a signature part of AIR APPARENT’s sound and recently allowed him to dabble into the realms of electro-pop and indie, echoing the likes of CHVRCHES and Purity Ring.

Speaking to his creation of the dream-like guitar production on the track, he adds, “The original guitar section was a synthetic sampled guitar sound since my electric guitar broke, but I ended up working with a great session guitarist named Paul Kinman, who was able to lean into the original vision around the guitar and provide a layered, summery feel! After that, it was just a matter of layering in all of the elements, stripping down complicated parts so each section of the song gave room to each section to breathe, and mixing/mastering!”

Stepping away from cold, longing for summer and for love and into the warmth of of their inner glow, AIR APPARENT shines with an independent maturity on “All By Yourself,” and hints to his future as an artist. The single is the first release after his sophomore EP, Color Dreams, in 2019 and his momentous single “three strikes” with Davyn in 2020, which garnered over 50,000 streams on Spotify. Originating from Atlanta, GA, AIR APPARENT found himself mixing in eclectic themes of hip-hop, Bollywood tunes and pop punk, making it easily accessible for him to transport any listener into a realm they have never experienced. Notion noted AIR APPARENT’s ability to create an otherworldly experience for the listener, writing, “Every time you tune into an AIR APPARENT track, you are instantly transported to his synth-based magical world.” With “All By Yourself (feat Krysta Youngs)” out now, AIR APPARENT opens his magical world up for travel into the cracks of the heart, showing that the remedy has been within all along.

BIO:

AIR APPARENT is a project from the mind of Indian-American dance musician Neil Sethi, who began crafting and releasing tracks in 2016. Raised on an eclectic mix of religious Indian music, Bollywood tunes, 2000s Atlanta hip-hop, along with punk rock and numetal, he took his first steps into production with the release of ‘Open Eyes’ and ‘In Dreams’ featuring Adventure Tiger, in 2017. These tracks bore resemblance and influence of indie pop groups like Purity Ring or CHVRCHES. He then went on to release pop ballad “Before it Gets Dark (Unfold Me),” which featured the wonderful Michelle Lu in 2017.

Following the success of his first three releases, he released a debut EP entitled ‘Imaginary’ in August 2018 – and then a steady stream of singles superseded along with his sophomore EP, ‘Color Dreams’ in 2019. Fast-forward to 2020 – the momentum continues with his collaborative release of ‘three strikes’ with the electro pop duo DAVVN, which has quickly amassed over 50,000 plays on Spotify alone.

As a dynamically versatile DJ/producer, AIR APPARENT has consistently polished a unique, signature sound release after release, treading genre boundaries between R&B, pop and electronic music. From 2021 and onwards into 2022, he’s looking to ambitiously expand soundscapes with a new single and album – so stay tuned to hear future tracks!
