With help from producer Christofi, indie-pop darling Nolan Feldpausch – or simply Nolie – recently dropped the latest Summer anthem “Think Back.”
The bouncy track comes from an army of singles the Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter is set to soon put out, all put together while in quarantine.
Ever since his 2019 debut single “Come Over,” he has enjoyed a wave of success that has taken him everywhere from a feature on Spotify’s Lorem Playlist to Zane Lowe’s “First On Apple Music,” with over 4.7 million streams across all platforms to date.
The Music Bugle had the opportunity to talk with Nolie about “Think Back” and more.
Music Bugle – How did you decide your stage name?
Nolie – My friends and family have called me this since I was little, but one day, my friend titled a demo of mine with “Nolie” and I had never seen it spelled out. I think almost immediately, I started using that for everything.
Music Bugle – What excites you the most about your style of music?
Nolie – I think the openness that a lot of artists have now, in regards to trying different styles, production etc., is s one of the most exciting things for the future.
Music Bugle – What was your goal for your single “Think Back”?
Nolie – The words “think back” were some of the first that I had for this one and that really set the tone for it all. It was super high energy and at the same time, a good way for me to do some self-reflection.
Music Bugle – How would you compare your new song to your earlier work?
Nolie – This record just feels…bigger, if that makes sense. As well, vocally, I felt very confident in the performances.
Music Bugle – Does social media help or hurt musicians?
Nolie – It’s allllll about balance. I’ve seen it be really gutting for some and extremely gratifying for others. I think artists – but really, their management and label, etc. – need to know not to force it. It gets painful when someone has a whole team dumping their money into all of this unnatural content trying to make them “cool.” Just be exactly who you are and make what you want to make. That’s way cooler.
Music Bugle – What do you attribute your success to, so far?
Nolie – I’m still figuring that “success” part out every day, so I guess maybe my willingness to try?
Music Bugle – What was your favorite memory while out on tour?
Nolie – The Bluebird Theater in Denver was a special show for me, my first time having my name on a marquee and they were the most engaged, loud and inviting crowd.
Music Bugle – How have you been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic?
Nolie – For me, I’ve been very lucky to have my partner throughout this time. I haven’t seen my mother since January of 2020 – my family is back in Southern Indiana – so that has been a hard one to deal with.
Music Bugle – Where do you go when you need a break?
Nolie – Outside. Like, alwayssss outside, usually with a little joint and some music.
Music Bugle – Who are you listening to right now, music-wise?
Nolie – Ohhhh, so many. My rotation right now is LEISURE, Chiiild and Rostam’s new record is a constant.
