Cryptozoologists release Pond Life, share “White Silk”
Whitehorse’s Cryptozoologists release new full length album, Pond Life;
share surreal stop-motion video for “White Silk.”

Realized at Whitehorse’s Old Crow Recordings with Patrick Hamilton (Soda Pony, the Sweeties), Pond Life comprises 11 songs of teetering hope, political angst and labyrinthine quests for grace and self-acceptance. Ahead of its September 4 release, Cryptozoologists shared video single, “White Silk.”

“With this song, I was trying to dismantle the romanticized construction of the self as solitary, able, and questing and instead, just remain open to being a small ingredient in a much bigger process,” said Cryptozoologists songwriter, Zach McCann-Armitage (he/him).

McCann-Armitage’s video sets the ruckus-like sound of sparse synthesizers and sequenced drums against a surreal stop-motion landscape.

“I had the first part of the idea – the figure of the cryptozoologist, this wandering, naive seeker made of white paper – but that image couldn’t hold its weight through a minute and 30 seconds of wacky situations,” he said.

“My solution to that was: tear this thing apart, have some frog-witches cast a spell with his remains to make something beautiful and strange and funny, which his gaze never actually penetrates.”

BIOGRAPHY

Like their namesakes searching out proof of the existence of sasquatches and other mythological creatures, Whitehorse-based art rock band Cryptozoologists is preoccupied with futility, bogs and swamps, and a scrappy pseudo-science DIY spirit. The songs, written by primary songwriter Zach McCann-Armitage, are from-the-garage gritty, but also sincere, distinct, and literary in ambition. Since its founding in 2016, the band has appeared around the Yukon in a few different lineup formations at the Dawson City Music Festival, the Atlin Arts and Music Festival and at Breakout West 2019. The band is currently led by McCann-Armitage on guitar and vocals, with Erik Vasseur on bass and Patrick Hamilton on drums.
