Moorpark, Calif.-based psych/surf rock band Three Sides has released a new song “She Don’t Mean To.”
Formed in 2017, the group consists of vocalist/guitarist Mark Cross, bassist Matt Villa, guitarist Charlie Alpert, keyboardist PJ Lombardo and drummer Alex Nelson.
The Music Bugle had the chance to chat with Cross about “She Don’t Mean To” and more.
Music Bugle – How did you guys get your band name?
Mark Cross – We went through a few different band names. The group loosely started with PJ, Alex and myself. “Three Sides” was agreed on because it’s ambiguous, even more-so now with five members. We like to leave the interpretation of our name open to the listener, just like our lyrics and music. Also, it’s a lot better than our first name “The Drunk Face.”
Music Bugle – How would you describe your new music?
Mark Cross – We’re definitely leaning more in the high-energy rock ‘n’ roll direction. We still have our chill psych/surf sound, but we aren’t afraid to put a little more grit behind it.
Music Bugle – What inspired your latest single “She Don’t Mean To”?
Mark Cross – Definitely our relationships paired with our obsession with The Doors at the time. We wanted to create a song that sounded undeniably familiar about a situation I’m sure a lot of us have been in – being under the spell of someone who’s no good for you.
Music Bugle – What excites you about your particular genre?
Mark Cross – The fact that it gets people dancing! Seeing people moving and sharing good times with each other is extremely exciting.
Music Bugle – How would you describe Moorpark, California to someone who has never been there before?
Mark Cross – Moorpark is a suburban town on the fringe of agricultural fields. The weather is perfect, it’s quiet and it sometimes smells like manure. If you’re in the area, we can – make music at the home studio, ride bikes, loiter, etc.. Let’s hang out after Covid!
Music Bugle – In what ways would you say the band has matured over time?
Mark Cross – We understand each other’s tendencies and personalities a lot more, which has helped us musically understand each other better.
Music Bugle – What’s the biggest challenge of having five members?
Mark Cross – Explaining to everyone why we’re called Three Sides!
Music Bugle – Does social media make it easier or harder for a band to stand out these days?
Mark Cross – It definitely depends on the band and the content. We think good music shines regardless. Social media definitely allows you to connect with a big audience.
Music Bugle – How have you guys been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic?
Mark Cross – We haven’t been able to have any concerts. That’s really the big one for us. When we release music, we usually have a big release party. It’ll be great when we can return to gigging.
Music Bugle – What’s something people should know about the band?
Mark Cross – Matt and Alex have a long time bet about who wins in a foot race. Definitely stayed tuned for that one.
